WORK

Healthcare: Business. As part of an effort to improve CIGNA’s provider portal, we conducted extensive research into the needs and goals of healthcare providers. We interviewed a variety of people in provider offices — those behind the scenes in hospitals and clinics — to understand what they needed from CIGNA in order to make their jobs easier. The end product was a series of detailed usage scenarios describing specific tools, views and information to develop in the next generation of the provider portal.
Healthcare: Consumer. A deep dive into the growing field of in-home healthcare services. We designed an interface for a tablet used by chronically ill patients to measure their vital signs, and upload them on a daily basis to nurses who monitor them remotely. We visited the homes of dozens of patients, interviewed a variety of nurses, and generated a full interaction framework that balanced McKesson’s medical professionalism with a sense of warmth and coziness appropriate to their homes.
Healthcare: Consumer. We generated an information architecture for United Healthcare’s member site, and delved into deep detail in the design of sophisticated cost estimation tools. This project involved a great deal of collaboration with subject matter experts at United, and a refinement of the site’s current visual treatment.
Healthcare: Clinical. We designed the interface of an application used to plan and carry out stereotactic radiosurgery, a type of neurosurgery used to treat inoperable brain tumors. We interviewed neurosurgeons around the country and generated an interaction framework that supports their skills as surgeons and their approach to image-guided neurosurgery.
Healthcare: Clinical. A new interaction framework and visual treatment for DePuy’s computer-assisted surgery application used by orthopedic surgeons to perform knee and hip replacement surgeries. We researched the design extensively, observing surgical environments and techniques around the world, and then collaborated with subject matter experts to create an interface that clearly and concisely displayed critical information, provided access to details and calculations, and required little navigation.
Design training. We went on-site to train designers at Australia’s national telecommunications provider. Over the course of three months, we demonstrated Cooper design methods and mentored Telstra’s in-house designers as they tackled a variety of challenges in their online tools for consumers.
Information system: Legal. A research-intensive project focused on understanding the users of Westlaw, a premier legal information system used by judges, lawyers and legal professionals around the world. We modeled a variety of Westlaw users, revealing the important areas of similarity and difference in the way that they approached their work, and the ways that they used Westlaw.
Information system: Marketing. We generated a new interaction framework for a web-based campaign management tool used by some of the world’s largest retailers, airlines, and wireless service providers. Part of a broader suite of Teradata applications, the tool allows non-technical marketers to perform sophisticated database analysis and reveal patterns among their customers.
Healthcare: Clinical. We designed Agfa’s next-generation picture archiving and communication system (PACS) used by radiologists to read and report on X-Rays, CT scans, MRIs, and Ultrasound studies.
Information system: Network planning. We did a quick, research-intensive redesign of GE’s telecom network planning environment. Used by telecom companies across the world, the tool is GIS-based, allowing network planners to use a graphical interface to model the existing network, plan network expansion, and model different means of solving various problems.
Information system: Library portal. We collaborated with engineers at Mentor to redesign tools used to populate and search a library of integrated circuit designs.
Healthcare: Clinical. In this project, we designed two aspects of a system used by nurses at the point of care. The first was a handheld device used to take blood glucose measurement, and to record non-instrumented tests. The second was a PC-based data management system used to track the results of the tests tracked by the meter, highlighting patient trends and detecting a variety of meter errors. Read more about the data management system, or about the meter
Information system: Enterprise storage. Over the course of many months, we designed multiple application modules for a next-generation enterprise data storage management environment. These modules provide a way to effectively visualize and manage storage across a variety of devices and vendors.
Consumer. In this brief project, we designed the PC interface for a handheld device. Akin to the Palm Desktop, the interface enabled the user to move music, games and applications onto the device, and also provided more robust tools to manage calendars and contacts. Read more about the PC interface
Financial services. This lengthy engagement involved a detailed redesign of Schwab’s online portfolio management tools. Targeted at high-value clientele, these tools provided access to charts, quotes (both standard and NASDAQ Level 2), and extensive order-creation functionality. Read more about the problems solved by the design
Developer tools. We redesigned the tools used by web and software developers to implement Immersion’s force feedback technology. Read more about our research
Business process. I did a couple of weeks of research and analysis of collaborative planning practices, and drafted a white paper.
